Dr. Phil Mitchell

Bariatric Surgeon, General Surgeon

Dr. Mitchell did his premedical and medical degrees at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, followed by a rotating internship in Ottawa, and general surgical training at the University of Calgary. After obtaining his Fellowship in 1991 he went on to Adelaide, Australia to complete 2 years of advanced upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgical training with Professor Glyn Jamieson (a world expert in the field). Establishing his practice in Calgary he has continued to push the laparoscopic envelope, introducing many of the advanced laparoscopic procedures to the Calgary area including laparoscopic banding in 2005.

Dr. Mitchell is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of Calgary and is helping to teach and train physicians and surgeons of the future. He has also been on the faculty of CMAS (Center of Minimal Access Surgery) in Hamilton, Ontario training surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques.

Dr. Mitchell began Laparoscopic Banding in Calgary in 2006 with three other like-minded and skilled UGI surgeons and partnered with the Surgical Weight Loss Centre in 2008. Surgical Weight Loss Centre was purchased by Centric Health and rebranded to Smartshape™ Weight Loss Centre in 2012.
