A foot and ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive way to diagnose and treat foot and ankle joint injuries or conditions.
What is a foot & ankle arthroscopy?
A foot and knee arthroscopy is a surgical diagnostic procedure used to diagnose the cause of any foot and ankle pain. Ankle and foot pain can often result from torn cartilage, ligament damage caused by a sprained ankle, or another ankle injury.
The surgeon uses the arthroscope—a tiny camera—to look directly into the foot or ankle. This enables a more accurate diagnosis so the surgeon can decide on the best treatment option. The surgeon can then treat the foot and ankle pain using small surgical instruments in addition to the arthroscope.
What does a foot & ankle arthroscopy treat?
A foot and knee arthroscopy may be recommended for these foot and ankle problems:
- Foot and ankle instability
- Infection in the foot or ankle
- Loose cartilage or bone fragments
Foot & ankle arthroscopy results
A foot and knee arthroscopy can restore function and eliminate pain in the foot or ankle in most patients.
Preparing for a foot & ankle arthroscopy
Patients may need to follow specific advice on what to eat and drink before a foot & ankle arthroscopy.
What to expect with a foot & ankle arthroscopy
A foot & ankle arthroscopy typically requires general anesthesia. This means the patient is unconscious for the duration of the procedure.
The surgeon first makes a small incision or incisions in the foot or ankle. This is large enough for small instruments, including a camera to guide the surgeon, to be inserted to perform the surgery.
Recovery after a foot & ankle arthroscopy
After surgery, the patient is taken to a recovery room to be monitored in case there are any complications. The procedure does not typically require an overnight stay. A patient must have someone on-hand to drive them home.
While each patient is different, arthroscopy typically allows for a shorter recovery period than more invasive surgical techniques.
