Hip replacement surgery is available to patients from outside of Ontario who have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the hip joint.
Direct Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery
Centric Health Surgical Centre Toronto is currently offering hip replacements using the Direct Anterior (DA) technique.
This technique involves operating from the front of the thigh to reach the hip joint, versus the traditional method of operating on the side or back approach which involves cutting and reattaching tendons and muscles to reach the hip.
The DA technique allows surgeons to access the hip between the muscles, which results in a less invasive procedure, quicker recovery and less post-op pain compared to traditional hip replacement methods.
The HANA® Table
The HANA® Table is a specially designed surgical table that allows for hyperextension, adduction and external rotation of the hip during the procedure to an extent not possible with conventional tables. The HANA® table is used in our Centre allowing surgeons to perform Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Arthroplasty safely and more effectively than the traditional approach.
Intellijoint’s 3D mini-optical Navigation System
Centric Health Surgical Centre Toronto also uses Intellijoint’s 3D mini-optical navigation system instead of intra-operative CT. The technologically advanced, smart, simple, sophisticated solution for total hip arthroplasty provides surgeons with vital intraoperative measurements, enabling proper positioning, equalization of leg length and joint center of rotation. Studies indicate component malposition causes instability and dislocations which are the most common causes of revision surgery for total hip arthroplasty. Accurate implant positioning and selection can assist in the prevention of leg length discrepancy, recurrent instability, dislocation, and can avoid costly revision surgery.
What does Direct Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery treat?
This surgery is still considered major surgery, and available for patients who have been deemed suitable for hip replacement surgery. Patients are often prescribed this treatment if they are suffering from worn or damaged hip joints, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis.
If you have been advised that you are in need of a hip replacement, you are likely a candidate for DA hip surgery.
Recovery after Direct Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery
We work with you pre and post-op to ensure you have the right local supports in place. Most patients arrive in Toronto the day before surgery and return home on the day of discharge two days after.
It is important to remember that Direct Anterior Hip Replacement is still major surgery. Please keep in mind that setbacks and complications can still happen and there is always going to be post-operative pain and swelling. It is important to remember that everyone reacts different to surgery and anaesthetic, but in our experience this approach allows for faster rehabilitation to get you back to your old self.
How soon can you go back to work Direct Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery ?
This question varies a lot based on what you do, and any accommodations that can be made (ability to sit/stand when required) for you at work and at home. Most importantly, it depends on you – your expectations, drive and recovery are all variable. Most “desk” type jobs can be resumed around 1 month post-op, sooner in some cases. Most physical jobs will need a longer recovery, typically 3-4 months.
