Meniscus tear repair surgery treats a meniscus tear, which affects cartilage in the knee.
What is meniscus tear surgery?
Meniscus tear repair surgery (meniscectomy) is typically minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery carried out by an orthopedic surgeon. Arthroscopic surgery involves small incisions through which the surgeon inserts small surgical instruments, and a small camera called an arthroscope, to repair the meniscus tear.
What does meniscus tear surgery treat?
Menisci are the two pieces of cartilage in the knee joint that provides cushioning between the femur and tibia. Menisci also help create stability as the knee turns and rotates.
Meniscus tears can occur when kneeling, squatting, or lifting heavy objects. The risk of a meniscus tear increases with age, and people who play competitive sports are also at risk. Meniscus tears often result in leg and knee swelling and stiffness, and a reduction in movement.
Meniscus tear surgery results
Meniscus tear repair surgery can restore function and eliminate pain in the knee in most patients.
Preparing for meniscus tear surgery
Patients may need to follow specific advice on what to eat and drink before meniscus tear surgery.
What to expect with meniscus tear surgery
Meniscus tear surgery typically requires general anesthesia. This means the patient is unconscious for the duration of the procedure.
The surgeon first makes a small incision or incisions in the knee. This is large enough for small instruments, including a camera to guide the surgeon, to be inserted to perform the surgery.
The surgery could involve a partial meniscectomy when the surgeon removes part of the torn meniscus, or a total meniscectomy when the surgeon removes the whole meniscus.
Recovery after meniscus tear surgery
After surgery, the patient is taken to a recovery room to be monitored in case there are any complications. The procedure does not typically require an overnight stay. A patient must have someone on-hand to drive them home.
While each patient is different, arthroscopy typically allows for a shorter recovery period than more invasive surgical techniques.
