A hemorrhoidectomy is surgery to remove painful hemorrhoids that can lead to itching, discomfort and bleeding.

What is a hemorrhoidectomy?

Hemorrhoids are swollen, inflamed veins in your anus and lower rectum which can lead to itching, discomfort and bleeding. Hemorrhoids may result from the increased pressure on these veins during pregnancy, undue strain on the affected area, along with other causes.

In most cases, hemorrhoids can be treated with a variety of minimally invasive hemorrhoid treatment such as hemorrhoid banding. However, if these procedures have not been successful, or for particularly large hemorrhoids, a surgical procedure known as a hemorrhoidectomy may be recommended by your doctor.

What does a hemorroidectomy treat?

Hemorrhoidectomy is the most effective method of removing hemorrhoids.

What to expect with a hemorrhoidectomy

If an external hemorrhoid has been caused by a blood clot, your doctor can usually remove the clot with a minor incision. This simple procedure should provide prompt relief. For more painful hemorrhoids or hemorrhoids that exhibit persistent bleeding, your doctor may recommend another minimally invasive procedure:

  • Rubber band ligation: one or two tiny rubber bands are placed around the base of an internal hemorrhoid to cut off its circulation and cause it to withers and fall off.
  • Sclerotherapy: a chemical solution is injected into the hemorrhoid tissue to shrink it.
  • Infrared, laser or bipolar coagulation: Lasers, infrared light or heat is used to cause small, bleeding, internal hemorrhoids to harden and shrivel.

If surgery is required, your doctor may recommend a hemorrhoidectomy, a procedure designed to remove the excessive tissue that causes bleeding. The procedure may be performed under a spinal or a general anaesthetic.

Recovery after a hemorrhoidectomy

Although effective, hemorrhoidectomy a high rate of complications including temporary difficulty emptying your bladder and related urinary tract infections. Most people experience some pain after the procedure, but it is easily treatable with medication.
