Endometrial uterine balloon ablation is a non-surgical procedure that treats excessive menstrual blood loss with the use of a heated balloon.

What is endometrial uterine balloon ablation?

Endometrial uterine balloon ablation is an outpatient procedure to reduce excessive menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia. Unlike a hysterectomy, which is a common treatment for menorrhagia involving the removal of the entire uterus, the uterine balloon treatment only affects the lining of the uterus through the application of heat.

What does endometrial uterine balloon ablation treat?

Menorrhagia, or excessive menstrual bleeding, affects 22 percent of healthy women. Endometrial uterine balloon ablation is often recommended for:

  • Very heavy periods
  • Bleeding for longer than a week
  • Anemia caused by excessive blood loss
  • Patients who have not found relief through drug therapy and do not want a hysterectomy

Endometrial uterine balloon ablation results

Endometrial uterine balloon ablation typically cures excessive bleeding in 85 percent of women.

Preparing for endometrial uterine balloon ablation

As women who are pregnant or have cancer of the uterus cannot undergo endometrial uterine balloon ablation, patients should be tested for both before the procedure. Patients may also need to follow specific advice around what to eat and drink before the procedure.

What to expect with endometrial uterine balloon ablation

Endometrial uterine balloon ablation is performed by a gynaecologist. It is a minimally invasive treatment, which means no surgical incisions are required. It typically involves a local anesthesia.

First, the gynaecologist widens the cervix opening by dilating it with medication or using rods. This enables the insertion of a balloon device through the cervix. The balloon is then inflated with heated fluid. The whole procedure typically just takes a few minutes.

Recovery after endometrial uterine balloon ablation

After the procedure, patients are discharged the same day. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within 2-3 days.
