What is AdVance Male Sling?

There have been a several types of male slings used over the years. The sling procedure we perform is the transobturator suburethral sling (AMS AdVance sling). This method of a male sling surgery has seen widespread since 2007.

More than two million men in North America suffer from incontinence and my lose control of urine when doing athletics, coughing, laughing, sneezing or lifting. This condition is both frustrating and debilitating. Incontinence of this sort is primarily associated with the aging process, but with increased prostate cancer screening has come increased early diagnosis and increased treatment for prostate cancer.

After a man of any age has undergone surgery for prostate cancer they may often find that their sphincters are no longer working as well as they used to and they may find they may suffer embarrassing leakage in these situations. Male Slings are a simple and effective way for men in this situation to regain control of their life and their dignity.

The aim of a male sling is to provide support to the urinary sphincter when abdominal pressure increases occur (caused by athletic activity or even coughing and sneezing), thus preventing the loss of urine.

What to expect during the AdVance Male Sling Procedure

A male sling is an outpatient surgery performed with either spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia and takes about 45 – 75 minutes to complete. A 2 inch (4-5cm) incision is made in the perineum (behind the scrotum) as well as two mini incisions on either side of the scrotum. The surgical mesh (polypropylene) sling is then inserted under the urethra and brought out through the mini incisions by using specially designed instruments. Then, the sling is adjusted to the proper amount of tension. A Cystoscopy is then performed to make sure the sling is in ideal position. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures. Patents can usually go home just a few hours after surgery.

Recovery after the male sling procedure

  • Swelling and bruising of scrotum often progress for 24-48 hours before starting to improve.
  • May experience pain or discomfort around incision sites.
  • May experience inner thigh discomfort.
  • May have difficulty passing your urine for several days.
