Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive way to eliminate twisted and painful veins.
What is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Varicose veins appear when damaged valves allow blood to reverse flow (reflux) and pool in the veins below the skin – typically on the legs and ankles. Aging, pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight gain and long hours spent standing can lead to varicose veins, but genetics and lifestyle can also play a role in their development. Varicose veins can also cause aching, swelling, night cramps, leg fatigue, itching and burning.
If you’re frustrated with twisted and painful veins, radiofrequency ablation (also known as vein ablation) is a minimally invasive way to eliminate those unsightly bulges. We offer radiofrequency ablation in our modern facilities to treat and correct varicose veins.

Radiofrequency ablation results
Radiofrequency ablation involves placing a small tube called a catheter into the diseased veins in the calf to thigh and then advancing it to the groin using ultrasound guidance. Anesthetic is then injected along the vein to be treated and radiofrequency energy is applied. This energy collapses the damaged veins to eliminate swelling, discolouration and allow for natural reabsorption. As minor bruising and redness subside, the bulging veins will flatten, fade and eventually disappear, leaving smoother, more youthful-looking legs. While radiofrequency ablation closes individual veins, the procedure can’t change or alter the tendency to develop new varicose veins over time.
Preparing for radiofrequency ablation
Your physician will provide detailed instructions to ensure that you are properly prepared for radiofrequency ablation. Patients are usually asked not to shave or apply lotion to their legs for 24 hours before the procedure. Wear loose, comfortable clothing or a pair of shorts. You will also receive guidelines on whether you need to avoid certain medications or supplements before and after the treatment.
What to expect with radiofrequency ablation
After a consultation with our experienced, board-certified physicians, the physician will make a small incision and direct radiofrequency energy through a thin tube inserted into the vein. The heat destroys the tissue along the length of the vein and seals it off to prevent future blood flow. The vein collapses and is gradually reabsorbed by the body. Radiofrequency ablation is performed with local anaesthesia or a mild sedative. Patients should be able to walk and return to normal activities immediately afterward, with the exception of strenuous exercise and heavy lifting.
Recovery after radiofrequency ablation
Patients will need to wear a compression stocking or bandage for a brief period after the procedure. During a follow-up appointment, the doctor will use an ultrasound to ensure the vein is fully closed and collapsed. Patients may experience minor bruising, pain, or prickling at the treatment site, and a slight burning sensation. These side effects are usually minimal, however, and should resolve within a few days after the procedure.
