Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy and Foam Sclerotherapy treats large, painful varicose veins.

What is ultrasound guided sclerotherapy & foam sclerotherapy?

Enlarged varicose and spider veins can be an unwelcome side effect of aging, pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight gain, and long periods of standing. Your genetics can also make you more susceptible to varicose veins, which develop when weakened valves allow blood to pool in the leg veins, instead of circulating it back up to the heart. The collected blood causes these superficial veins to swell, appear blue in colour, and bulge beneath the skin.

At Centric Health, we offer Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy and Foam Sclerotherapy (also known as Ultrasonic Sclerotherapy) to treat large (and often painful) varicose veins.

Am I a good candidate for ultrasonic foam sclerotherapy?

During a one-on-one consultation, our vascular surgeon will determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for sclerotherapy. Typically, good candidates are non-smokers who have:

  • Good health and a stable body weight
  • Realistic expectations for the procedure
  • Unsightly spider or varicose veins
  • Large, painful veins that swell or throb

This technique represents an evolution of liquid sclerotherapy in which advanced compounds are mixed with sterile gases to create a stable, effective sclerosant. Foam sclerotherapy is used to treat larger (>2.0 mm), underlying vein abnormalities which cannot effectively be treated using standard liquid sclerotherapy. Foam sclerotherapy is used to treat veins larger than 2.0 mm and is often administered using ultrasound guidance. The foam causes intense spasm and clotting of the treated vein. Once clotted, the affected vein is absorbed by the body.

Ultrasonic foam sclerotherapy results

You may require several sclerotherapy sessions to eliminate your varicose veins, depending on the size and number of veins and your desired results. Once the bruising fades, the treated veins will fade and eventually disappear. While sclerotherapy destroys the treated veins so they can’t reappear, the procedure can’t change the tendency to develop new varicose veins over time.

Preparing for ultrasonic foam sclerotherapy

The physician will provide detailed instructions to ensure that you are properly prepared for sclerotherapy. Patients are typically asked not to shave or apply lotion or moisturizer to their legs 24 hours before the treatment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing or a pair of shorts. Patients will also receive guidelines on whether you need to avoid certain medications or supplements before and after the procedure.

What to expect with ultrasonic sclerotherapy

During the procedure, your physician will use the ultrasound to guide a solution-filled needle directly into the target veins. The foam solution causes the veins to contract and collapse, forcing blood to re-route through healthier veins. The closed vein is gradually re-absorbed by the body and will fade over time. Each session takes about a half hour, depending on the size and number of veins that require treatment.

Recovery after ultrasonic sclerotherapy

After treatment, patients will need to wear compression stockings and follow any other instructions that the doctor provides. Most people can return to work and normal activities immediately afterward, and moderate exercise is typically encouraged. Patients will experience some mild bruising, soreness and redness at the injection site. Some patients have also reported small skin sores, darkened lines or spots, and tiny red blood vessels, but these temporary side effects typically fade within 2-3 weeks. More serious, yet extremely rare, complications can include inflammation, blood clots and air bubbles in the bloodstream.
